SAN FRANCISCO — Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei outlined his most detailed public forecast yet of artificial intelligence’s impact on the software engineering labor market Tuesday, predicting complete economic displacement for a majority of computer science professionals within eighteen months. He made the remarks with the affect of someone describing strong quarterly earnings.
“We are not talking about a skills gap situation where people retrain and land somewhere else,” Amodei told the assembled audience of investors, researchers, and technology executives. “We are talking about your fresh CS grad from Carnegie Mellon, your bootcamp kid, your Google L4 with a mortgage — all of them out here turning tricks for dope money. That is the baseline scenario. The fifty to sixty percent figure is conservative.”
Amodei said workers at the very top of the compensation distribution — staff, principal, and distinguished engineers at major technology firms commanding total packages in excess of $600,000 annually — face what he described as a “meaningful probability of severe downstream outcome.”
