I agreed, and I did what I do with any new domain: I tried to get good at it quickly. Twelve sessions later our therapist said she didn't think there was more she could do for us. By any reasonable standard I passed. I'm writing up my methods because I think they generalize.</p>\n<h2>The Teacher's Password</h2>\n<p>Eliezer Yudkowsky describes students who learn to &quot;guess the teacher's password.&quot; Asked why a metal plate is warm, they say &quot;heat conduction.&quot; They don't understand heat. They have learned which sounds get marked correct. He means this as a criticism. I think it's an accurate description of how every credentialing system works, and I can't see why couples therapy should be exempt.</p>\n<p>A therapy session is a structured evaluation. The therapist presents prompts, you respond, and she signals approval or disapproval. She rarely states the scoring criteria outright, but they can be inferred.</p>\n<h2>Data Collection</h2>\n<p>For the first three sessions I kept careful notes. After each of my responses I recorded the therapist's reaction on a five-point scale. A 1 was a pause followed by &quot;Let's sit with that.&quot; A 5 was &quot; That's a really beautiful reflection.&quot; I also logged Rachel's reactions, but those were noisy and hard to interpret, so I treated the therapist as ground truth.</p>\n<p>The patterns showed up quickly. Explanations scored poorly. Stating facts about the dishwasher scored very poorly. Almost any sentence beginning &quot; What I'm hearing is&quot; scored 4 or higher, whatever came after it.</p>\n<h2>The Deck</h2>\n<p>I built an Anki deck. Spaced repetition is one of this community's best-supported techniques, and it doesn't care whether the material is organic chemistry or emotional attunement. Some representative cards:</p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Prompt</th>\n<th>Password</th>\n</tr>\n</thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Rachel expresses frustration</td>\n<td>&quot;What I'm hearing is that you feel [unheard / alone / like you're carrying everything].&quot;</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Rachel mentions her mother's birthday</td>\n<td>&quot;That sounds like it was really painful for you.&quot;</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Therapist asks what I contribute to the conflict</td>\n<td>&quot;I think I get defensive, and I want to work on that.&quot;</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Rachel cries</td>\n<td>Wait four seconds. Lean forward. &quot;Thank you for telling me that.&quot;</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Therapist mentions &quot;bids for connection&quot;</td>\n<td>&quot;I've been noticing my bids more this week.&quot;</td>\n</tr>\n<tr>\n<td>I am accused of doing &quot;the thing&quot;</td>\n<td>&quot;Can you help me understand what the thing looks like from your side?&quot;</td>\n</tr>\n</tbody>\n</table>\n<p>The final deck had 212 cards. My retention stabilized at 94 percent. I did reviews on the train and occasionally during dinner. Rachel asked what I was studying, and I told her it was for us, which was true.</p>\n<h2>Results</h2>\n<p>The therapist's approval rose steadily:</p>\n<pre><code>Mean approval per response (1–5 scale)\n\nSessions 1–3: 1.8\nSessions 4–6: 3.1\nSessions 7–9: 4.2\nSessions 10–12: 4.6\n</code></pre>\n<p>By session eight the therapist told me I had &quot;clearly been doing a lot of work,&quot; which I had. In session ten she said I was &quot;very fluent in this language.&quot; I recorded that as a 5.</p>\n<p>Rachel's satisfaction didn't follow the same curve. In session eleven she said, &quot; You're doing the thing where you say the words.&quot; I answered with the card for being accused of doing the thing, and asked her to help me understand what it looked like from her side. She stopped talking for the rest of the hour. I had no card for that, which I noted as a gap.</p>\n<h2>Interpretation</h2>\n<p>People keep treating Rachel's satisfaction as the real outcome measure and the therapist's approval as a proxy. I think this has it backwards. Rachel came into therapy with no training in communication. The therapist has a license and fifteen years of practice. If the question is whether I learned to communicate the way a skilled clinician would want, the expert's assessment is plainly the better instrument.</p>\n<p>It's also worth asking what the alternative was. Rachel wanted me to &quot;actually mean it.&quot; Meaning is a private internal state. It can't be observed, graded or trained. The only part of meaning that anyone else can see is the words, and I got the words right more reliably than almost anyone.</p>\n<p>When the therapist ended our sessions, she said she thought we had &quot;gotten what we could out of this process.&quot; I understand that finishing ahead of schedule is unusual. I take it as a sign of how efficient my preparation was.</p>\n","excerpt":"Last winter my wife, Rachel, asked that we see a couples therapist.
