{"post":{"feed":"main","pinned":false,"id":"against-chronological-age-proxy-maturity","slug":"against-chronological-age-proxy-maturity","title":"Against Chronological Age as a Proxy for Maturity","author":"latent_maturity","body":"
My girlfriend is 19. I am 34. Most criticism of this relationship begins by treating chronological age as a sufficient statistic for maturity, which seems difficult to justify. Age is observable, continuous, and conveniently recorded, but the variable people actually care about is some latent construct involving judgment, independence, emotional regulation, time preference, social competence, and expected life trajectory. There is no particular reason to assume that two people separated by fifteen years must therefore be farther apart on that latent variable than two randomly selected people from the same age cohort. At best, chronological age is a noisy proxy with substantial within-group variance, and a great deal of the discourse around age gaps appears to consist of forgetting the distinction between an estimator and the thing being estimated.
\n
This matters in my case because I have spent the last eleven years playing guitar in a metalcore band, work part-time at Guitar Center to preserve touring availability, live with our former bassist Derek, and have deliberately optimized around a career path with unusually high outcome variance. My girlfriend, meanwhile, goes to our shows, sells merch when we need help, understands why the second breakdown on the new single had to be simplified, and assigns considerably more probability than most people my age do to the band eventually becoming successful. If you condition only on birth year, our pairing looks anomalous. If you condition on actual lifestyle, status hierarchy, risk tolerance, leisure preferences, and beliefs about the expected value of continuing to play regional metalcore shows, the mismatch becomes much less obvious. Chronological age is doing almost all of the inferential work precisely because it is the easiest variable to measure.
\n
I have dated women closer to my own age. The problem is that women in their thirties tend to have a fairly rigid prior about what a 34-year-old man is supposed to have accomplished. They ask why I still live with Derek, whether I have health insurance, why my car is registered to my mom, and how long I have been saying the band is about to take off. Usually ten or eleven years, depending on whether you count the original lineup.
\n
This gets treated as strong negative evidence, but I think people misunderstand high-variance careers. Music does not progress like accounting. You do not become 7% more successful every year until one day you are promoted to Senior Metalcore Guitarist. The distribution is lumpy. One support slot matters. One playlist matters. One clip catches at the right time and suddenly the previous decade gets redescribed as “paying dues.” We opened for Hollow Veil last November. It was a Tuesday and there were maybe seventy people there for our set, but their tour manager watched almost half of the last song from side stage. People laugh when I mention this because nothing immediately happened afterward, which seems like a very poor understanding of option value.
\n
My girlfriend understands this better than most women my age do. She actually likes the band. She comes to shows, has sold merch, knows which songs people move for, and immediately understood why we simplified the second breakdown on the new single. Apparently this counts against the relationship because she thinks being in a band is cool. I don't understand why one status hierarchy should be treated as objectively correct. Among her friends, playing guitar in a touring metalcore band is high status. Among 34-year-old women with office jobs, it is low status unless the tour bus has a driver.
\n
The other argument is that there is a “power imbalance.” There probably is, in some dimensions. I have more life experience. She understands TikTok better than I do. I know how to deal with promoters; she can make a flyer in Canva in ten minutes that gets more engagement than the one our bassist paid $120 for. Relationships contain asymmetric competencies. Once age is involved, though, people seem to aggregate every asymmetry in one direction.
\n
The funniest version is when people say she is too young to know what she is doing while also claiming the relationship disrespects her autonomy. She approached me. Technically she replied to an Instagram story of our merch table with a skull emoji, but the causal direction is still clear. At some point, respecting an adult woman's agency has to include the possibility that she makes a choice her friends consider low-status.
\n
People also say we are in “different life stages,” which sounds persuasive until I look at my actual life. I do not have children, own a house, or have a salaried management job. I rehearse three nights a week, work enough shifts at Guitar Center to cover bills and keep my schedule open for shows, and currently have around $1,100 in checking, although Matt still owes me $240 from the last merch order.
\n
I know this can be read as evidence that I am developmentally behind. Fine. But then those same people insist relationships should be assortative by life stage. You cannot use my delayed conventional adulthood as evidence against me and then refuse to let it update the comparison class. That is just asymmetric updating.
\n
The harshest version is that women my age “know better.” I think this mostly means they no longer assign enough value to my lifestyle to compensate for its inconveniences. They want someone with a better apartment, more money, more predictable weekends, and maybe a job where Saturday in Allentown for a VFW show is not treated as a meaningful career opportunity. That preference is legitimate, but it is not moral insight. A 32-year-old accountant deciding she does not want to date me because I spent $680 on a pedalboard while rent was due may be making an excellent decision for herself. It does not follow that the 19-year-old who thinks the pedalboard sounds sick has been manipulated.
\n
People also smuggle the band's current level of success into the moral judgment. If I were 34, dating a 19-year-old, and playing guitar in a band with three million monthly listeners, the age-gap criticism would remain, but the surrounding narrative would change. I would be a musician. Right now I am “a guy in a metalcore band.” That distinction is doing more work than people admit.
\n
Our latest single has 31,000 streams. That is not huge, but it is not zero. Maybe in five years I will still be explaining why the next EP is different. Maybe the band never gets bigger. Neither outcome tells you much about whether my girlfriend can decide who she wants to date.
\n
What bothers people, I think, is the conjunction. The age gap is suspicious, the band is pathetic, and the fact that she believes the band might succeed makes the whole thing fit an extremely familiar story: thirty-four-year-old unsuccessful musician dates nineteen-year-old because women his own age recognize that he is a loser.
\n
I understand why that model is attractive. It explains everything at once. But “women my age have lower tolerance for my lifestyle” and “therefore younger women cannot sincerely prefer my lifestyle” are different claims. The first is obviously true. The second does not follow.
\n
And yes, I know how this sounds. “She's mature for her age,” “women my age are too conventional,” and “the band is about to blow up” are not exactly novel sentences.
\n
The fact that losers have historically said things does not make every occurrence false.
\n
Sometimes the girl actually is mature for her age, and sometimes the band actually is about to blow up. Statistically, somebody has to be the guy for whom both are true.
\n","excerpt":"My girlfriend is 19. I am 34.
